South African Post Office is South Africa's national postal service, responsible for delivering international postal shipments and internal correspondence to individuals and legal entities. It also provides an urgent postal service and carries out EMS shipments. EMS shipping rates with SAPO are higher, but allow for speedy delivery.

There are two types of general prohibitions and restrictions that are typical of all postal services: weight/measurement and content. All necessary information can be found on the official SAPO website. The permitted types and possible restrictions for the shipment of goods also depend on the country of destination.

Which tracking numbers does South African Post Office use?

Letters and parcels are sent with a SAPO tracking number, which can be used to track the movement of the package. The sender may not register small packages and letters, in which case they will not have a tracking number.

The international postal identifier consists of an alphanumeric sequence:

  • For small packages weighing up to 2 kg: Rx123456785ZA;

  • For shipments weighing between 2 and 20 kg: Cx123456785ZA;

  • For EMS shipments: Ex123456785ZA.

According to the international format of the Universal Postal Union, the structure of the tracking number has a specific meaning for each letter and digit:

  • First letter R/C/E: indicates the type of shipment. A SAPO tracking number that starts with the letter R (Registered) designates registered small packages;

  • 123456785: this numerical sequence provides a uniqueness;

  • ZA: refers to the country of the originating postal service.

Tracking of SAPO postal packages

To avoid worrying about your shipment from South Africa and knowing where it is at any given moment, you can track a package on the Postal Ninja website with the translation of all tracking statuses.

The sender can obtain the tracking number for a SAPO shipment by registering it at the post office. You can also register a shipment remotely. Remember, however, that electronic registration does not guarantee that the sender has actually sent the item. In the former case, the physical delivery of the item is immediate, so the tracking information is very quickly added into the tracking system and the recipient can immediately verify the start of the international postal shipment.
